A collaborative and dynamic psychotherapist, Dr. Kathryn Smerling specializes in creating healthy and meaningful relationships. She works with individuals and families in all phases of life, crises-related or otherwise. Her extensive professional and educational experience has developed her working knowledge of a broad range of techniques, allowing her to creatively tailor sessions to meet the specific needs of her clients.
Dr. Smerling provides individual adult therapy, as well as comprehensive couples and family therapy. She also specializes in family systems, with an approach that is both inclusive and supportive of children and their needs within the greater picture of the family. Having begun her career as a nursery school teacher, Dr. Smerling has always been an advocate for children and their education. She is an authority in aiding families going through divorce, both as a parent coordinator and a child advocate, and she is a known expert with families who have children in the autistic spectrum, especially when it comes to working with their siblings.

More About Dr. Smerling
With extreme commitment to her outside work, Dr. Smerling currently serves as a clinical instructor at Mount Sinai in the department of OBGYN and on the Dean’s Council at the New York University School of Social Work. Previously, she was on staff at Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry and was an instructor at Fordham University in the department of Early Literacy. She also served on the Auxiliary Board of Mount Sinai Hospital, on the Council Against Substance Abuse as co-chairperson of the Women’s Leadership Forum-Education Committee in New York, on the Child Care Action Campaign, on the Concerned Parents for AIDS, on the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services, and on the National Center for Learning Disabilities
Dr. Smerling completed a Ph. D. from Fordham University, an M.S.W. and advanced training in both analytic and family therapy from New York University, and an M.A. from Cornell University. Following her M.S.W., she continued her studies with the Extern Program at The Ackerman Institute for the Family, and the National Institute for Psychotherapies (NIP). At the Northside Center for Childhood Development in New York City, Dr. Smerling was a Family Therapist where she utilized play therapy with children and their families, while coordinating access to community resources.
In addition to her private practice, Dr. Smerling is a nationally recognized expert contributor for CNN, HLN, and Fox News. She has contributed to ABC News in New York, USA Today, and Vanity Fair. She was a panelist on the Kimberly Guilfoyle Show (Fox) for two years and is Rosie Pope’s therapist on Bravo’s “Pregnant in Heels”. Random House has published forty texts by Dr. Smerling in Spanish and English for use by early childhood supervisors, teachers, parents and paraprofessionals, including Instep, an early childhood curriculum for the State of New Mexico.

By far, Dr. Kathryn Smerling is the kindest, most compassionate doctor I have been after working with several therapists. She is very understanding, and she has never judged me. She knows the real pain I have been in. She is doing her best to help me help myself get better, and I love her.
